A pretty place in some places, they had a nice visitor enter with a walk around and many hiking trails, much thru swampy places.
Several Magnolia trees found in the marsh, I was able to get close enough to get a pic of a late flower
From here, we headed down I-10 to the Florida section of the Gulf Islands NS, to visit the old Fort Barrancas, which is now inside the Pensacola Naval Air Station. I thought we might not get in, as the security guard at the NAS gate was pointing out the MC equipment required on Base... which I did NOT have. Things like full leather gloves, long sleeve shirt, reflective vest... but in the end, I played on his sympathy, how we rode all the way from Houston to see the Naval Museum (Housed there also) and the old Fort. He relented to a ride straight in & out. Great!
Fort Barrancas, the remains, were simply dirt and stone walls, built to repel invaders from the sea. Interesting, but we did not do the FEE'd tour. Quick pics
We had a very good visit with the Park Rangers in the Visitor Center. They were very knowledgable about local history, and Confederate History.
However, we left as the INVASION started. A group of nearly 80 young school kids... Time to go.
We drove on to Panama City Beach, FL, and Brother's Muy Wayne-o's Tex-Mex restaurant. Hey, good company, free food, free beer, and a free place to sleep. What's not to like? We're gonna visit here until Sunday AM, then on east & north.4
Total miles for the day, 348.
